Fresh Herbs Rosemary

Why Are Herb garden Plants Such A Big Hobby These Days?   by George Faulkner

What is it about herb garden plants that gets people so passionate about them,is it the smell, the uses or just the sheer beauty of some of them.I don't really think there is adefinitive answer to this question.People grow herb garden plants because they like them, simple as that really.

There are all types of herb gardeners out there who love different things about the herbs they grow. The smell of sweet basil wafting around in the breeze or the lavender and its calming aroma.Maybe its the aloe vera for the medicinal properties or st.Johns wort. Maybe the rosemary for coking or oregano. There is such diversity amongst the herbs and their uses that you simply cannot pin the reason why herb garden plants are so popular these days.

I personally love the taste of the herbs I grow, basil, parsley and rosemary to name but a few as I am a keen experimental chef and I like the tastes of herbs and how they can transform a simple meal into a culinary delight.

Your reasons will be different from mine I guarantee that but the point is that herbs have so many uses that there are just so many reasons why herb garden plants are grown as a hobby these days.

If it is just cooking then there are the well known herbs to grow,Basil, chives, chervil, dill, parsley, fennel and garlic to name but a few must haves in the kitchen herb garden.

The medicinal herbs to have are aloe vera,st.johns wort, chamomile, peppermint, borage,Hops are all important medicinal herbs and there are literally thousands more too.

Some beautiful looking herbs to have in the garden are the bee balm with its red thistle like flower,Trillum with its white beautiful flowers, and birthroot a member of the trillium family too.Again there are many many more to choose from.

The choice is whether you want beautiful plants to look at or to eat them or for medicinal purposes. There are so many reasons to grow herb gardens that it is nearly impossible to put the reason down to one single thing.

It is more than possible that people tend to grow herb gardens quite simply because they want to and they like the herbs that they grow, nothing more than that.Maybe I am looking too deep into why grow herbs without looking for why not grow herb garden plants as the reason.

Another reason could be the cost of herbs. The supermarket varieties of fresh herbs are a little poor to say the least but if that is all you have rather than dried then so be it. However, what you pay for these small black pots of fresh herbs is robbery really. They do not last very long either but you could transplant them as soon as you get home and try to grow larger potfulls of herbs from them. I must admit I am not too keen on supermarket herbs myself as they have been around in these pots for some time prior to reaching the supermarkets and unless cared for properly "en route" there is a good chance that they will die off pretty soon after you get them home. Not all the time but quite often most of the time.

Quite obviously the reasons to grow herb gardens is not as straightforward as one would think but the main issue here is that we do continue to grow herbs as a hobby and will do so for many years to come.
