Counselor CEUs - Not Merely Just Completing Your Required Coursework

Almost every state utilizes continuing education for the various fields of professional licensure. This requirement is expected of each licensed professional. Professional Counselors are a prime example of this. The CEU requirement for counselors will vary among the states; however, the consistent variable is that CE is necessary for license renewal.

Many counselors will approach this task of continuing education as something to just get through because they are told to do so. Contrary to this are those that take this mandate as a chance to further develop their own abilities and knowledge base. Are you part of group one, or group two?

There is nothing wrong with just wanting to get through the classes in order to fulfill your CE requirements. Time is a valuable commodity, something that is becoming more and more scarce. Client demands are high, insurance reimbursement is difficult, family dynamics are changing and requiring more attention. All of these are valid reasons to "just get through" the required classes. But, ask yourself, "Do I want to stagnate in my career? Or, do I want more?"

If you decide you want more out of your career, here are some other great questions to ask yourself:
"What are some areas for improvement in my current practice?"
"What are some areas that must be developed in order to stay current?"
"What are areas of interest that can be applied to my profession that have not been undertaken?"
"What do I envision regarding my professional career in 5, 10, 15 years?"
"How can I take this vision and make it real?" (ie: courses to take, resources to acquire, etc.)

Bottom line is that if you want to grow and develop yourself further, your options are limitless. There are many opportunities for development for the everyday counselor to the very specialized counselor. The internet makes it vast more simple and convenient to pursue the developmental resources needed.

If you are serious about growing in your professional life, you shouldn't wait until the final days of your license renewal period. Prepare far enough ahead to all yourself time to develop the areas that are currently lacking and to learn new skill sets that will be necessary down the road. Then work your plan. Don't allow yourself to fall into the common rut of complacency. Instead use the requirement of continuing education as an opportunity break new ground professionally.
